Well, we have "Married by America," so how about "Bought by the Archives Board?" I've been trying to decide which Archive I should get next, but I'm stuck so I'll appeal to the consensus of the board. I've narrowed the field down to three that I want most at this time. Here they are along with my reasons: 1)Action Comics vol.1 - I just purchased Superman vol.1-3 on eBay this weekend and I'm wanting to try and read the Superman stories in order to get the best view of how they progressed (or at least in as much order as I can without a Superman in World's Finest volume). For that reason I'm leaning toward this volume, but the other two are also drawing me, and reading the Man of Steel in order of publication isn't critical... 2)All-Star Comics vol.5 - I'm trying to catch up by the time volume 9 comes out. I just finished vol.4 and want to read this one, but am worried about burnout if I go too fast. 3)GA Green Lantern vol.2 - I love Alan, and vol.1 just arrived in the mail today. I was also worried about going too fast with this series, but I'm loving the first volume and certainly wouldn't mind getting the next one before I finish... Unless I change my mind and decide I like one over the others, I'll likely go with whichever one the group picks for me by Friday. Thanks for making up my mind for me!!! -Steve ------------------ IP: Logged |

Steve, get GA GL #2. That series can use your support. Vote with your wallet for more GA GL. (Actually, if you don't have GA Flash yet, throw that on your list, too!) All-Star is percolating along fine without you. Action #1 would be my second choice (and probably my first choice from a pure collector's standpoint. What Archive collection is complete without the first stories of Superman?). IP: Logged |

OK, so now if everyone else is just quiet, Steve will go out and buy GA GL #2 just as the "group" tells him . . . . ![]() IP: Logged |

Steve...get GA GL#2...it really begins to pick up steam with Vol. 2. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Marty, I do have GA Flash vol.1 and am currently volleying between it, Batman vol.2, Dynamic Duo vol.1, GA Green Lantern vol.1, and Plastic Man vol.2. (Soon to be joined by Spectre vol.1, Superman vol.1, and whatever volume I buy as a result of this.) I really need to step up my Archive reading as I don't like to be involved in reading more than two or three books at a time tops. Others that were on my list of potential buys were Black Canary vol.1, Doom Patrol vol.1, Flash vol.1, and Wonder Woman vol.1. However, I just wasn't AS excited about those as these three. -Steve ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'd go with Action #1 -- you're only going to have one chance to read these stories for thefirst time in the order they were originally presented, so you should probably pick it up before you get too far into the Superman volumes. But my sympathies DO lay with the GL crowd. Rob IP: Logged |

Actually, I'm having a very similar problem. Although I'm only up to All Star 3, two of the Archives up near the top of my "must buy" list are Action vol 1 and GA GL vol 2. I also recently bought Superman vol 1,2, & 3 off Ebay. While I completely understand the urge to read these stories in chrongolgical order, but I think the Superman Archives gives a pretty good representation of where Superman comes from. You don't want to get burned out. So, for me at least, I'll probably go with GA GL first. Also, I have to higly recommend the Doom Patrol archive. I wasn't sure what to expect but I saw that one cheap on E-bay and it blew me away. Great stuff! IP: Logged |

As if you didn't know what I'd suggest...GA GL #2!!! Gary "Marty really is right about putting some money into a series that can use support" O. IP: Logged |

Of the three choices, I'd suggest All-Star v5. You're already beyond Action v1 in terms of chronology, and All-Star would bring you closer to your goal of catching up by v9. Action v1 is quite good, but you're not missing a lot (history aside). In regards to GA GL v2, you have to seriously ask why you should "vote with your wallet" for a series that hasn't received enough support to get fast-tracked. Is it really worth the cash to support a book that someone else wants more of (and not very many "someone else"s, based on publishing history and perceived sales)? Do yourself a favor and buy the one that you want. You can't go wrong with that. ------------------ IP: Logged |

BearPaws, Steve clearly is interested in GA GL, or it wouldn't be on his list. Our man Steve is a GA freak, remember -- we hardly need to sell him on the merits of these fine '40s comics. Note his comments about how much he liked the 1st GA GL volume. I'm not trying to shove something down his throat he won't like; I'm merely suggesting that, given a choice between 3 volumes he likes equally, it might be worth considering to support a volume that could use better sales figures. I hesitate to speak for Steve, but I think it's safe to assume he'd like to see all 3 of these series continue. So why not help out the title that's developing more slowly? If Steve was sure which of the three he wanted, he wouldn't be soliciting our opinions. IP: Logged |

Whoops -- got distracted and sent my last post early. To finish, I sense that BearPaws doesn't care for GA GL much. Fine; I heartily encourage BearPaws to not buy that volume if he feels that way. But I was trying to give Steve something to think about in answer to his question, and I'm confident Steve'd get enough enjoyment on his own out of GA GL. Obviously, I don't expect Steve to buy something just to make me happy. (I continue to marvel at how explicitly you have to state things on the Internet to avoid having people take shots at you based on their misperception of, or inaccurate reading of, what you've written. Geez, I'm a lawyer, and I think some of this nit-picking is absurd. Do I also have to state that nothing in this post is meant to be misogynistic, or racist, or to suggest that I dislike puppies? Perhaps a page long disclaimer attached to every post . . . .) IP: Logged |

I'll add a hearty vote for GA Green Lantern, vol. 2. Hard to pinpoint why. The art is weak, and the stories are often pretty routine. But for some hard-to-grasp reason, I derived a great deal of joy from it. In fact, it's a pet favorite of mine. Like an old b-film that makes up for its lack of polish with an endearing effort and sincerity. IP: Logged |

quote: You're right, I don't care much for GA GL. I've tried hard, but I just can't find the as much enjoyment with them as I have with virtually any other title. It's a high favorite of many posters (most of whom seem to be on this thread), and that's perfectly fine. What I find hard to take, though, is the concept of "buy this book because it needs support to warrant another volume", with hardly any other justification. That only tells me that you like the series enough that you want another volume, but if I'm ready to toss a coin, you aren't really helping me -- you're only trying to help yourself. That's the way I see it. Side note to srca1941: All of your original choices feature characters you've already read some of. Of the also-rans, I'd go for either Doom Patrol or Black Canary. They're both surprisingly good, given their marginally successful original runs. ------------------ IP: Logged |

So far it's 5 for GA GL, and 1 each for Action and All-Star (with a strong side endorsement of Doom Patrol). I'm leaning toward GL and Action more than All-Star now since I get 2 volumes per month (the new one (or the next one I need in the new volume's series) and one old), I have time to collect them all by July which is the earliest All-Star vol.9 could be out. And who knows, I may get a good deal on a couple of them like I did with Superman... But I'm still open to all three. -Steve ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, if you get All-Star 5, you're closer to your goal of getting caught up. Getting GA GL 2 will show support, and could cause the series to be fast tracked or something, and you could end up behind on that. If I were in your position, I'd go for completing All-Star, then move to other series. IP: Logged |

Eric, you won't get to read part one of the Powerstone story until Action Comics Archive Vol. 3. I just ordered six Archives myself,* and GA GL #2 is in the next order past the one I just made, but I say go for GA Green Lantern Vol 2. I really enjoyed GA GL # 1. I am a sucker for all that is Golden and I want more! Since I am so Pollyannaish and ignore all negative comments on the art and stories, I have enjoyed every Golden Age Archive from page one to the endnotes.

Hmm, I forgot about the 2-part Superman story. What issues are those again? -Steve ------------------ IP: Logged |

The Powerstone story was reprinted in Superman # 252 June 1972, aka DC 13 which was a 100 Page Super Spectacular. The two parts came from Action Comics # 47, April 1942 (pt. 1), and Superman # 17 July-Aug. 1942 (pt. 2). Art by John Sikela. Part one is in Action Comics Archive Vol. 3, and Part two is in Superman Archives Vol. 5. Sorry for the tease, and misinformation about the Powerstone Story, Steve. If I had gotten out of my chair and gone to the bookcase, instead of using my faulty memory, I would have known that it (The Powerstone story) was not in one of the Superman Vol. you just got. My apologies. Maybe by time you get up to Superman Vol 5 you will also have Action Vol 3. IP: Logged |

I would go with Action #1, even though GA GL #2 is a better read. I say this because Action #3 and Superman #4 & #5 are some of the best reads in the archive line, and if you are anything like me you'll want to read them in order. So you may as well get the ball rolling, and save the GA GL #2 as desert after the Superman meal. IP: Logged |

DOOM PATROL. I have to admit, I'm a little biased here as the DP has been a favorite of mine for ages. This is a very good volume, though. ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: I know what you mean. This happens to me all the time. Occasionally, it was my fault. I either didn't say what I meant, or I wasn't clear. However, most of the time I clearly said exactly what I meant. This is why many of my posts are long. One time, someone insulted a group of people on this board. I explained why the insult wasn't a fair one. The original poster modified his original insult in such a way that it was clear he hadn't read beyond the first sentence of my explanation. Here's what really baffles me. In some cases, I knew how people would misinterpret my post before I posted, so I added a sentence that dealt expicitly with that situation. Occasionally, people have responded with the exact misinterpretation that I thought I had prevented. Back to your regularly scheduled thread... IP: Logged |

Steve, I'm assuming that you will buy all 3 eventually. Skip All-Star. Even if you are not caught up by the time 9 is published, you will definitely be caught up by 11. Although I agree that GL needs the support, I don't think one sale is going to have a big effect. (Feel free to by 10 GLs and 20 Flashs) If you love GL so much that you want volume 2 right away, you are going to go nuts waiting for 3. I'd have to say Action. I think the reading order is critical for the Luthor stories. Believe it or not, there is actually some continuity. Not much, but you will know that you missed a story. IP: Logged |

Current Tally: *Action Comics vol.1: 3 votes. *All-Star Comics vol.5: 2 votes. *Black Canary vol.1: 1 recommendation. *Doom Patrol vol.1: 1 vote and 1 recommendation. *GA Green Lantern vol.2: 5 votes. Even though GL is winning, I think I'm leaning more toward Action since it's the perfect opportunity to read the better part of the first 100 Superman books in order (minus World's Fair/Best/Finest). Like people have said, All-Star can wait, and I'll at least be caught up by 10 if not 9. And with GA GL, I'll have more to look forward to if I spread it out a little. So unless anyone has a REALLY convincing argument for one of the others, I may go ahead and put my order for Action in with Amazon tonight or early tomorrow. -Steve ------------------ IP: Logged |
